The Conciergerie Castle – Royal Palace and Prison

The Conciergerie Castle

The Conciergerie Castle

The Conciergerie Castle – a royal palace in the distant past, and later a prison, has a rich history of its existence, because it was built back in the 6th century. The name of this palace comes from the title of local managers, called concierges, who, being very influential people, enjoyed the trust of the king himself. It is located in the western part of the Ile de la Cité in the center of Paris, near the legendary Notre Dame Cathedral.
At the end of the 14th century, the Conciergerie castle became the Palace of Justice, and the royal residence was moved to the Louvre. A prison is also located here, which later received the status of one of the most terrible and harsh. It housed swindlers, political prisoners and murderers.
Famous political prisoners spent their last days here before being sent to the scaffold. In the Conciergerie you can find the cell of Queen Marie Antoinette, one of the instigators of the revolution Maximilian Robespierre, the famous writer Emile Zola or the desperate robber Cartouche. The famous spy Mata Hari was also sentenced to death in this prison.
Throughout its history, the Conciergerie Castle has been completed, strengthened and expanded. A huge variety of heterogeneous architectural structures – this is what the modern architectural ensemble of the Conciergerie represents. It includes:
Silver Tower, Caesar’s Tower, Clock Tower (a huge clock has been installed on it since 1371), Bonbek Tower (the oldest of the towers, dating back to the 11th century), Hall of Warriors (a four-story Gothic hall built between 1302 and 1313), The Guardroom (a vaulted room in the Gothic style), the Guard Room, Rue de Paris, the Chapel of Marie Antoinette (built in 1815 on the site of the cell in which the Queen of France was held, condemned to death), the Women’s Court and the Corner of the Twelve.

The Conciergerie Castle itself is part of the modern Palais de Justice complex. Municipal services, the court and the prosecutor’s office are still located here.
